Native English, UK qualified and professionally registered counsellor and psychotherapist working with clients of all cultures in Brussels - Woluwe St Lambert, close to Montgomery
Welcome to my counselling and psychotherapy practice website. My name is Judy Sleath and I am a qualified, registered (United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy and European Association for Psychotherapy) psychotherapist, counsellor and supervisor of other practitioners.
Originally from the UK, I am a native English speaker. I have over sixteen years of experience working with adult and older adult inviduals in Brussels and the surrounding area, for whom English is the first language or preferred second language. This website is aimed at providing you with information about counselling and psychotherapy and to give you some idea whether I, as a counsellor and psychotherapist, can help you.
My experience spans working in the NHS (National Health Service) in the UK, part of a group counselling practice here in Brussels, and private practice counselling and psychotherapy with people from a broad range of backgrounds and cultures. I also have previous experience in coaching, management and organisational development.
I work both short and longer term, depending on what you are facing and your particular circumstances. Counselling is a relatively short-term option where a specific problem may be looked at over a few months. Examples might be a problem at work, a one-off relationship difficulty or a recent loss.
Psychotherapy is a longer-term option, with the intention of making sense of difficulties that seem to repeat themselves in your life, and bringing about change. Examples might be destructive relationship patterns, persistent anxiety, ongoing lack of self-confidence...
Areas in which I regularly work include:
depression,
anxiety,
emotional issues, for example anger, sadness, emptiness
bereavement and loss,
isolation and loneliness,
abuse,
self-esteem, self-confidence, identity,
relationship issues, separation, divorce,
chronic/terminal illness,
workplace stress,
relocation/cultural difficulties,
life transitions, for example parenthood, retirement,
traumatic experiences....
However, what you are experiencing may not have a ‘name’, as such, yet you know that it causes you distress. You may notice that areas of your life are consistently not going well or that the same problem keeps coming back. You may be/have been persistently bothered by something over a long period. I have a particular interest in issues which are persistent and deep-seated, where the reasons for their existence are not immediately apparent and where change may take some time.
People often wonder which ‘type’ of psychotherapy is most effective - research has shown that it is the relationship formed between you and your psychotherapist or counsellor which is one of the most important factors in the outcome. Indeed, psychotherapy and counselling have also been called ‘talking cures’ as they allow you to express your concerns and struggles to another person, a psychotherapist or counsellor, who will listen to you and work with you to explore, understand and, if you wish, bring about change. This requires a level of commitment from both client and therapist.
My English-speaking psychotherapy and counselling practice is located in Woluwe (1200 Brussels), a few minutes’ walk from Josephine Charlotte & Gribaumont metros, and with nearby on-street parking (blue disc). I am within easy reach of central Brussels/Schuman and the eastern Brussels areas. A map and location information is available in Contact/Location.
